India Becomes the World’s 2nd Largest 5G Market with 400M+ Users

India has officially emerged as the second-largest 5G market in the world, crossing 400 million 5G subscribers, second only to China. This milestone was highlighted by Union Minister of Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia, showcasing India’s rapid digital transformation.

Since the launch of 5G services in 2022, India’s adoption rate has been among the fastest globally. Today, 5G networks cover 99.6% of the country’s districts and reach nearly 85% of the population. This expansion has been powered by the installation of approximately 4.69 lakh 5G Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) by telecom operators across the country.

Rapid Adoption Reshaping India’s Mobile Ecosystem

According to the Communications Ministry, nearly 25 crore users have already adopted 5G services. This reflects a major shift in India’s mobile ecosystem, setting new global benchmarks in scale, speed, and digital growth.

Rural connectivity has also seen strong momentum. Rural telephony has grown by 42.9% over the last decade, almost double the growth rate of urban areas. This highlights how digital access is expanding beyond cities and driving inclusive growth.

Adding to this momentum, India’s total internet connections have crossed 100 crore, a massive jump from just 25.15 crore connections earlier, signaling widespread digital adoption nationwide.

Atmanirbhar Bharat and Indigenous Telecom Progress

Aligned with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, India is accelerating the development of indigenous telecom infrastructure. The country has now become the fifth nation globally to develop its own 4G technology, which is fully upgradable to 5G. This marks a significant step toward technological self-reliance.

Further strengthening this vision, the government is pushing ahead with advanced research under the Bharat 6G Mission, aimed at positioning India as a global leader in next-generation communication technologies.
